SDI’s modern approach to diving

SDI’s philosophy re-evaluates old dive and teaching practices and adapts these with current divers in mind. From the beginning of your Open Water Scuba Diver course, you will train using modern technologies. You will learn to dive using online learning as well as use dive computers during your training dives. The SDI training structure is flexible with the individual student in mind.

Open Water Scuba Diver course content

During your SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course in the Cook Islands, you will gain knowledge and experience in:

• Understanding the aquatic realm: Learn how vision, light, sound, and heat loss differ underwater and how tides, currents, waves, and surge affect diving.
• Physics and Physiology: Understand the principles of pressure, volume, buoyancy and the implications of breathing compressed air.
• Equipment Mastery: From selection and assembly to maintenance, learn how to handle dive gear responsibly.
• Dive Planning and Diver Safety: Develop all necessary diver skills, such as basic scuba skills, communication, underwater navigation, buddy systems, emergency procedures, and basic rescue techniques.

Course segments

1. Online learning through SDI’s online learning portal
2. Confined water training inside the sheltered lagoon
3. Open water dives off the boat

Online learning

The first part of the training is to master the academic side of scuba diving. Complete the theory online through SDI’s modern online learning platform at your own pace. We encourage to complete the theory in advance before coming to Rarotonga. This way you can focus on your in-water training while here.

Confined water training

After mastering the theory side of the course, you will apply your knowledge in a controlled environment under the watchful eye of an SDI instructor. Confined water training is all about getting comfortable with your dive gear and learning essential dive skills before venturing into open water.

Open water training

Once you have practiced skills in confined water, you will venture into open water where you will practice and perfect the skills you’ve learned in real world environment. During your SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course you will conduct at least four open water boat dives at real dive sites around Rarotonga.

Your SDI instructor will be at your side throughout the training and guide you through the course.

SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course at a glance

You will have to fill out a questionnaire about your medical history at the beginning of each SDI dive course. If you answer any of the questions on the medical form with YES (apart for being 45 years or older), you will have to get a medical clearance from a physician prior to any in-water training. Not included is lunch and drinking water. You must also organise your own transport from your accommodation to our dive centre and back.
