Adventure Cook Islands Centre de Plongée et Location
The Cook Islands and specifically Rarotonga’s lagoon offers amazing snorkel spots that are easily accessible for everyone off the beach. For this reason, snorkeling is one of the favourite activities for many visitors that come to Rarotonga.
Our range of adult and kids snorkel gear is all you need to explore the amazing marine world. Our snorkel sets come with mask, snorkel and fins. The water temperature inside Rarotonga’s lagoon ranges from 23° to 32° C. For this reason, most people are more than happy to snorkel these waters without a wetsuit. Nevertheless, should you wish to wear a wetsuit for more thermal protection as well as extra buoyancy when you snorkel in Rarotonga, we have these for hire too.
The best places for snorkeling inside Rarotonga’s lagoon are in the Aroa rā‘ui (Marine Reserve) in front of our dive shop and in Tikioki by Fruits of Rarotonga. However, anywhere along the south coast is nice. Just make sure you stay well clear of the passages (channels) as they can have strong currents moving towards the open sea. Likewise, make sure you do not get too close to the surf zone, specially when the suf is up.
Alternatively, you can also try out the Black Rock area for snorkeling. When sea conditions on the south coast are too rough, you often find sheltered conditions here.
If in doubt where to go, ask our friendly Adventure Cook Islands team about the best spots. We are always more than happy to give you advice on where to go snorkeling.
If you have never snorkeled before, don’t worry. Snorkeling is very easy! Just ask us for instructions and the dos and don’ts when you hire our snorkeling gear. You will be away exploring Rarotonga’s lagoon in no time
